Responsible Gambling Initiatives
Our Commitment to Responsible Gambling
At the Malawi Gaming & Lotteries Authority (MAGLA), we are committed to ensuring that gambling in Malawi remains a safe, fair, and enjoyable form of entertainment. As the regulatory authority for gaming and lotteries, we work closely with licensed operators, support organizations, and the wider community to minimize the potential harms associated with gambling.
We recognize that while most people gamble responsibly, some individuals may experience challenges related to gambling behaviour. That is why responsible gambling is at the core of our regulatory framework.
Is Gambling interfering with your life ?
You do not have to face it alone. We have established comprehensive resources and responsible gambling initiatives to support individuals and families facing gambling-related difficulties.
Partnerships for Support and Treatment
As part of our responsible gambling initiatives, MAGLA has established a working partnership with Saint John of God Hospitaller Services, a respected provider of mental health and psychosocial support services in Malawi. Through this collaboration:
- Individuals experiencing gambling-related problems can be referred for professional assessment and treatment.
- Counseling and rehabilitation services are accessible to those in need.
- Public awareness efforts are strengthened through shared expertise in mental health and addiction support.
This partnership ensures that gambling-related harm is addressed not only from a regulatory perspective, but also from a health and wellbeing standpoint.
Our Campaigns and Community Initiatives
Self-Exclusion Program
MAGLA provides a Self-Exclusion Programme to help individuals who wish to take a break or completely stop gambling. Self-exclusion is a voluntary process that allows a person to request that licensed gaming operators deny them access to gambling services for a specified period of time. This tool is designed to support individuals who feel their gambling is becoming difficult to control.
How Self-Exclusion Works
- You voluntarily apply for self-exclusion through MAGLA or a licensed operator.
- Your details are recorded in a confidential self-exclusion register.
- Licensed operators are required to deny you access to their gaming platforms and premises for the agreed period.
- The exclusion period may be temporary or long-term, depending on your request.
Self-exclusion is confidential and handled with dignity and respect. It is a proactive step toward regaining control.
If you would like to enroll in the Self-Exclusion Programme, please fill out this Self – Exclusion form and submit to us or contact MAGLA on our toll-free line 4252 directly for guidance.
- Toll-Free Helpline 4252
MAGLA operates a toll-free helpline (4252) to provide support, guidance, and referrals.
By calling 4252, you can:
